It's a real problem for me in this mod, there are numerous, they often have great speed (especially winged little demons). So I have to purchase and block them in a corner which sometimes makes me run *a lot*. This is the only solution I found for a melee character. And it's really boring when I must use this trick to kill 15-20 opponents, it requires lot of time for nothing. It forces me avoiding levels where ranged enemies are in number (like level 6 for example).
I know this is a really hard mod, but here, it's not a matter of difficulty, that spoils fun of the game. Surely I don't know all about this game, so I want to hear your strategy to kill efficiently these ranged enemies. And if I could suggest one thing, I would like monsters don't flee automatically but only have a chance to do that (25%-30% ?)

if you're playing a plain brute character like Gladiator, you can do the following:

-your above mentioned technique;
-corner them. that means you stand behind the door, then walk one square aside, then the monster loses sight of you and starts walking to the last position where it saw you (which is behind the door), technically it will pursue you and walk out of the door soon, and to surprise that little bugger you start swinging your.. (whatever you're swinging) diagonally, pointing to the door, then by the time that monster is flying out of the door you'll hit it. If you're lucky, you'll stunlock it and kill it without giving it a chance to recover from hits. Clear?
-play in cooperation with ranged attacking players (Scout/Mage), that makes those things easier
-use bows
-use the runes, they have devastating power and can often kill one boss pack if it's not immune to that kind of damage - that's my favorite way btw, and it's also kind of spectacular;

if you're playing a semi-melee character like Monk or Assassin then you can add even more ways of killing:
-StoneCurse them and kill afterwards (an old Diablo technique);
-Cut their retreating territory by setting fire/lite walls right (be aware that Lightning never affects flying creatures because it runs on the ground (an exception is beholders because they are connected to the ground energetically))
-cast Golem
-kill them by magic/fire/lightning/holy bolt...

As you can see there are numerous ways. Just find your favourite.

upd: I think looking through Jarulf's Guide, section 5.5 would also help you because all the ranged attackers you complain to have difficulties with use the same generic AI - Goat Archer of high Intelligence Factor. Read it and you'll be armed with the best weapon: knowledge.

Behavior of goat archers is completely predictable, difficulty is not here. It's just that it takes plenty of time to corner them being a pure melee character in Single Player (of course, in Multiplayer with some cooperation, class weaknesses partially disappear).

By the way, trying this mod in Multiplayer would be interesting, are some players eager ?

It's actually harder in Multiplayer because you don't have a second chance. In SP you can reload continuously until you become the master of cornering biggrin

Honestly, I LOVE SinglePlayer. It has its own sweet sides, so to speak...

Yes, pppl are mostly friendly in Hamachi. If you like MP better then that's your choice. I don't know about you, but in my own experience I found out that co-op partners maybe equally helpful or equally irritating. One has to be picky about that wink

Anyway, there's the sticky thread about how to setup Hamachi for playing with others. I believe it has all you might want to know about getting online.

Strange, I thought you only played in MP. I also prefer SinglePlayer because I feel safe. I'm not good enough to play in Multiplayer at high levels (especially in this hard mod). A stupid mistake occur too fastly. But I have to admit Multiplayer, even if stressful, offers more possibilities (like friendly fire indeed...). Nothing replaces enjoyment of playing with a partner.

Magical friendly fire is a curse of TH. Still maybe.

I have personally tried playing with a hi level Mage. No chance. A single Litenova can kill you in an instant.

It resembles TheDark where Sorcerors are somewhat a helping class, not the frontline fighters. There they usually backup, but casting a lot of offensive spells while in coop with other players can be too dangerous.

But if such damage gets disabled the game becomes less interesting, imo.

It's one area of the game that deserves some thought...

There will always be players who don't know how to avoid harming themselves or others. Those that do know, actually enjoy *controlling* all that power.

no wonder, mages are my least preferred class
most of the issues with them I fix are the result of Mage players reports

if only monsters have FF between them, too.

but this would require a lot of time for planning and rewriting the balance.

With high mage spells which deal damages on large areas (chain lightning, fiery & lightning nova particularly), it is almost impossible to play with another player being a sorceror. I'm glad FF is disabled in TH, perhaps it makes the game less realistic, but finally much more fun and playable. That's the only one thing which counts for me.

I only use such spells (novas) when I need to clear out rooms in dlvl1-8. Open door -> spell -> close door. And then the warrior/archer goes in and kill everything that survived really fast.

Anyway. I don't really care if FF is on or not tongue
